Location
Benalmadena Pueblo was founded during the Muslim invasion of the Iberian Peninsula in the eighth century. It was originally named Ben-Al-Madina by the Arabs, which, when translated means "children of the mines". This was because ochre and iron ore were once mined locally.
Today, the Pueblo has become a beautiful village of whitewashed houses, adorned by brightly coloured flowers. Just outside the village are two modern additions which add to the interesting places to visit. The Benalmadena Stupa, or Buddhist Temple was inaugurated in 2003, and is the largest one of its kind in the Western World. The views over the coast from outside are amazing. Entrance to this ‘not to be missed' attraction is free. The second, and most modern of all is the Mariposario de Benalmadena, or Butterfly Park, and is the largest of its kind in Europe.
